A TEACHER IS THE BACKBONE IN NATIONAL EDUCATION

Despite the many titles given including ‘teacher’, ‘ustaz’, and ‘lecturer’, educators are no doubt the ones who shoulder the majority of the responsibility for sustaining the obligation to educate each and every one of us—spanning the present, the past, and even the future—in allowing for the transparent transmission of knowledge. The Vice-Chancellor of Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM), Prof. Dr. Haim Hilman Abdullah said, it is beyond question that educators play a significant part in assisting each student in becoming a contributing member of society today and in the future.

"I accepted the invitation to share knowledge with educators and the community here with openness in line with the continuation of the UUM-PIBKS Building People's Well-Being (MEKAR) programme which was inaugurated by the Minister of Rural Development, Dato' Seri Mahdzir Khalid recently," he said at an event which gathers 800 educators from all over Pendang at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Pendang (SMK) last Friday. Haim Hilman added, this programme is also considered an endeavour to improve ties with educational institutions in particular and with all educational institutions in Kedah and even in Malaysia.

This kind of sharing is genuinely priceless because it is the responsibility of these educators that keep the flame of their shared enthusiasm alive. Along with that, he also shared about the highs and lows of his life, from elementary school to secondary school to university to his current role as the Vice-Chancellor of UUM. The programme, organised by Pendang Education Office and Pendang Education Foundation, was also attended by Kedah State Executive Committee, Dato' Suraya Yaacob. According to her, such a programme was intended to inspire educators as well as the Parent and Teacher Association (PIBG) in this district, honouring the sacrifices made by educators in training their kids to be beneficial to themselves, the community, religion, and the country.

"The invitation of the country's famous figure, Prof. Dr. Haim Hilman Abdullah to Pendang can certainly inject enthusiasm among those present because he is well known as a lowkey personality who managed to capture the pinnacle of academic success," she said. She is optimistic that through cooperation, teachers would enjoy their work, helping educate the nation's youth, and being rewarded by Allah in this world or in the hereafter.
